By the end of the year 2019, it is estimated that the overall number of women drivers in Saudi Arabia may reach to 100,000. Already, 75000 women got their driving licenses approved the Saudi Government in less than a year.

In Dammam and Najran, about in a month , there is a possibility that two new driving schools may open their doors for the women to learn driving as in order to get their driving licenses approved. Infact, there are plans to establish 11 new driving schools in several parts of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud passed an official order to end the ban on women driving in September 2017.

Even the Director General of Traffic gave a positive response towards women’s driving by saying that Women in Saudi Arabia have till now proved to be responsible drivers and have not violated any such laws which are a threat to the public safety.

The Al-Qassim region has already launched a school with an area of 55,000 square meters. This school was the first of its kind in that region  and also the 7th in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Those women who already have International driving license will be able to dire in the kingdom without a need to join any driving school and also women who are from other Gulf countries will be able to convert their driving Licenses to Saudi licenses.

Women on visit Visa who have come to visit Saudi arabia and possess International Driving License will be able to drive in Saudi for a year without converting or applying for a Saudi license for a maximum of one year.

If an international driving license expires in less than a year from the date a Saudi woman arrives in the Kingdom, she will need a Saudi driving license before the expiry of her international license.

The General Directorate of Traffic said it complies with strict anti-harassment laws that will not tolerate any harassment of female drivers.

Women will be employed at different traffic checkpoints. The General Directorate of Traffic will also recruit women field inspectors for checking women drivers

All the above will be implemented from June 2018.

The traffic Rules & Regulations will be the same for women and men.

Per the official order issued by King Salman the committee witht the Minitries of Internal Affairs has to be formed and should give advice on practicalities of the issues order within 30 days to issue
driving license for women by amending the current traffic laws.

A Senior Cleric in Saudi Arabia has already confirmed that there is not prohibition in Islamic Laws related to women for driving Cars.

This step will increase Kingdom’s view towards Social reform and will help society towards equality between Men & Women.
